Damon Walker is a contrabass instructor, performing musician, and luthier who hails from New York City where he spent his earlier years as a furniture maker, architecture student, and bassist performing with many acts throughout New York’s famous venues, The Bottom Line, CBGB’s, and the like.
In 1995 an apprenticeship with world renown luthier David Gage (NY) perfectly united Damon’s woodworking, design experience, and passionate love of bass into what would become his life’s focus. Damon followed that long and rewarding training with journeymanship under Barry Kolstein (NY) and later with makers Robert Young and Jason Viseltear (NY).
By the millennium, Damon was receiving some of NY’s most established bassists in his Harlem apartment and is fond of sharing memories of which unlikely musicians sat on his futon while he worked. Damon’s abilities garnered a substantial following of loyal clients from MA to NC who still rely on Damon’s expertise whether locally at his shop, or via occasional interstate house-call trips.
In 2014 Damon opened the Dr. Bass shop (his first brick & mortar home) in Durham, NC and rapidly cultivated it into a beloved local resource for professionals, beginners, and school programs across the Triangle. The shop is celebrated for consistent quality, excellent customer service, and its host of offerings under one roof; sales, consignment, rental, repair, lessons, jam session, workshops, and more.
“Clients see exceptional value in avoiding cumbersome trips to the repair shop and instead having expert service conveniently provided at their gigs or homes.”
